ESMIG elects new President and Executive Committee

ESMIG, the European smart energy solution providers, has announced its new Executive Committee following the annual General Assembly in Lisbon on June 21. The event also marked the occasion of the group's 10th Anniversary.

The new President is John Harris, Vice President and Head of Regulatory and Governmental Affairs for Landis+Gyr. Mr Harris has been active in the association from its founding ten years ago. He first led the working group on Regulation and Policy and in 2015, he also started serving as the Vice President of ESMIG. John Harris takes over from Maher Chebbo, Chief Business Innovation Officer for Digital Energy at General Electric.

“I am delighted and honored to take on ESMIG’s presidency – and want to thank Maher Chebbo for his tireless devotion to this important role in ESMIG over the last four years,” Mr Harris commented following the election.  “In the past ten years, this association has become more than just a voice of the metering industry in Europe. As we experience disruptive changes throughout the energy industry, ESMIG is continuously working on shaping the framework of the energy transformation by representing its members’ interests and making positive contributions to policy and technical debates.”

A graduate in International Economics and European Studies from Johns Hopkins University, Mr Harris looks back on a career of more than 20 years in the energy industry. Before joining Landis+Gyr as Vice President and Head of Regulatory and Governmental Affairs in 2008, he worked in E.ON’s EU Representative Office in Brussels, and in the Energy Policy Dept. of E.ON Energie in Munich, Germany. Since June 2016, he has been chairman of Swissmem’s (Swiss machine, electronic and metal industries) committee for environmental and energy policy.

The new Vice-President is Mike Woodhall, Co-founder and Managing Director at Chameleon. In the past two years, he was leading the working group on Marketing and Events at ESMIG. Mike has over 26 years’ experience in multi-national businesses with more than 15 years as a director for major UK manufacturing companies. Eight years ago, he co-founded Chameleon to connect emerging smart technology, energy retailers and consumers, as the rollout of smart meters across the UK looked set to become a reality.

“I look forward to continuing the great work by ESMIG members to bring about the benefits of smart meters for all EU consumers. It is important that industry and policy makers work together to ensure that the consumer benefits of the smart, flexible grid are realised across all European member states. ESMIG is the ideal organisation to help to make this happen. I am delighted to be the new Vice President and look forward to working with John Harris, the new President, all members and the secretariat,” adds Mike.

Part of the Executive Committee will also be:

  • Patrick Caiger-Smith, CEO at Green Energy Options. He will lead ESMIG's working group on Consumer Energy Management
  • Nicolas Chalvin, VP Enterprise IoT at Gemalto and responsible for Enterprise IoT offers in the Mobile Services & IoT Business Unit at Gemalto. He will lead ESMIG's working group on Security and Privacy.
  • Wayne Flanagan, Head of Energy & Utilities at Vodafone. He will lead ESMIG's working group on Communications Technologies.
  • Frances Williamson, Head of Communications and Industry Engagement at Chameleon. She will lead the Regulation and Policy Working Group.
